Layover at Madrid-Barajas

What fits in your time, in plain words. Last checked 15 October 2026: schedules, prices and works change, so always confirm on the official pages.

1. First: can you leave the secure area?

It depends on your passport, visa, ticket and whether your bags are checked through. If you are not sure, ask your airline before planning anything. If you cannot leave, stay in the terminal and use the time there. GateHello’s meeting spot is before security, so it only works for you if you can get there.

2. Less than 3 hours: stay put

Boarding closes well before departure and security queues vary, so leaving the terminal is rarely worth it. Eat, charge your phone, and check your gate on the Aena app or the airport screens. If you change terminals, check how the transfer works with Aena.

3. Around 3 to 6 hours: make the wait useful

Enough time to eat properly, work for a while, rest, or say a short hello to someone in the same situation. Keep an eye on the time and be at your gate early.

4. Many hours and you may leave: a short trip to the centre

Local sources describe the Cercanías C-1 train from T4 and Metro Line 8 (with an airport supplement) as the usual ways to reach the centre, and a fixed-fare taxi. Check the current service, prices and any works before you go, and plan to be back with plenty of time for security. We have not verified these details ourselves.

5. Luggage

According to the Madrid tourism office, T4 has a paid left-luggage service on level 0, in the arrivals hall, open 05:00 to 23:00 (it may change). It is not for the departures hall, so allow time to walk there and back.

6. Staying comfortable and safe

Keep your documents and valuables with you, tell someone where you are if you meet a stranger, and use official taxis and transport. In an emergency call 112.

7. Want to say hello to someone?

GateHello is a free pilot that introduces two adults who share a layover, for a short chat in a public place, only if you both say yes. Nobody from GateHello attends: it is automatic and you can leave whenever you like.
